Slovakia aims to import approximately 1.2 billion cubic meters of gas annually from Azerbaijan. This information was announced by the country's Economy Minister Denisa Sakova following a meeting with Azerbaijani officials in Baku. It is expected that gas supplies will begin next year.
Seeking alternatives to Russian gas
According to Minister Sakova's statement, Slovakia will completely stop importing gas from Russia starting from 2027. For this reason, the country is interested in Azerbaijani gas and considers Baku a reliable alternative source. The minister stated that Slovakia's SPP gas company will conduct negotiations with SOCAR in this direction.
According to the minister, Azerbaijan is ready to conclude long-term gas contracts with European countries. Within this framework, cooperation formats of 5 and 10 years are being offered. Such agreements will create the necessary foundation for Azerbaijan to increase gas production, since part of the gas currently produced is used for domestic needs, while the rest is exported abroad.
Denisa Sakova also noted that Slovakia intends to build long-term partnership with Azerbaijan not limited only to energy trade and to share its sectoral expertise.
Regional electricity project
During the meeting in Baku, the Azerbaijani side introduced Slovak guests to another major project. The project envisages the transmission of electricity produced in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan through Turkish territory to Europe. Slovakia believes this initiative could open significant opportunities for Europe.
