The Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues. The disease has already spread to six provinces of the country and has been recorded in dozens of health zones.
Jnews.az reports that according to the latest data released by the World Health Organization (WHO), 4,665 confirmed Ebola cases were recorded in the country as of August 12. Of these, 2,184 people lost their lives, and 965 patients recovered.
Although the epidemic was initially recorded in Ituri province, it later spread to North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uele, Tshopo, and Bas-Uele provinces.
According to WHO, the disease reached a total of 54 health zones. A subsequent report by the ECDC states that the number of affected health zones has risen to 57.
It is considered the largest Ebola outbreak ever recorded in the republic. The number of confirmed cases has already surpassed the previous record of 3,317 cases in 2018–2020.
The spread of the disease is also influenced by the humanitarian crisis in the country, forced displacement of the population, high mobility, and security issues in some regions.
New measures are also being implemented to stop the epidemic. According to Reuters, vaccination of healthcare workers in direct contact with Ebola patients began in Congo on August 27.
WHO and other international partners continue work in the country aimed at detecting, isolating, and treating patients, tracing contacts, and preventing the spread of the infection.
