Georgia's Infrastructure Ministry's Department of Motor Roads has announced an international tender for the reconstruction of highways connecting the country with Azerbaijan and Armenia. The project envisages replacing existing two-lane roads with modern four-lane motorways. The total cost of construction has been set at 250 million euros.
Financing and tender terms
The project will be financed through credit funds from the European Investment Bank. Interested companies can submit tender offers for each lot by August 14 of this year.
Route and technical parameters
The planned roads will start from Rustavi city and extend in two directions—toward the Red Bridge and Sadakhlo. Within the tender framework, the construction of a total of 61.3 kilometers of four-lane motorway is envisaged.
Current infrastructure problems
Currently, the highways connecting Georgia with neighboring countries—Azerbaijan and Armenia—are two-lane and pass through densely populated areas. This situation both slows traffic flow and negatively affects road safety. The new motorways will have higher capacity and will be built away from residential areas.
