Israel’s proposed «Armenian genocide» recognition initiative has been stalled following diplomatic pressure from Azerbaijan. According to reports, Baku’s diplomatic efforts played a decisive role in the process.
According to claims, in June the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs began discussions on the issue of recognizing the so-called «Armenian genocide». The initiative emerged amid ongoing tensions in Israel-Turkey relations, causing serious concern in Baku.
It is reported that Azerbaijan was not informed about the initiative beforehand. Baku assessed that Azerbaijan’s position, the Azerbaijan-Turkey strategic alliance, and Azerbaijan-Israel partnership were not sufficiently considered during the preparation of the decision.
According to information, on June 29 Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveyed its official position to Israel and called for reconsideration of the initiative. Through diplomatic channels, Tel Aviv was informed that such a step could negatively affect both Israel-Turkey relations and Azerbaijan-Israel strategic cooperation.
It is noted that Azerbaijan’s arguments gained support among various political circles in Israel. Individuals representing different political schools of thought, expert communities, and state institutions became supporters of reconsidering the initiative.
As a result, according to claims, the process related to recognizing the so-called «Armenian genocide» has been effectively frozen and the issue has not advanced in the agenda of the Israeli government and parliament.
