Major phase of Greater Tel Aviv metro construction launches. Next month, work will begin on excavating the first tunnel for the M2 metro line.
In the first phase, a special shaft will be excavated at approximately 35 meters depth—equivalent to the height of a 12-story building. Subsequently, a giant tunnel boring machine (TBM) designed for tunnel excavation will be lowered into this shaft, and construction of the underground tunnel will commence. Within the project framework, a total of 24 such machines are planned to operate.
The M2 metro line, which will be 26 kilometers long, will have 22 stations. The new route will connect the cities of Petah Tikva, Givat Shemuel, Bney Brak, Givataim, Tel Aviv, and Holon. According to estimates, the line will serve more than 500,000 passengers daily.
The M2 line will cover important transport and public facilities in the country, including Bar-Ilan University, Ha-Shalom railway station, the headquarters of the Israel Ministry of Defense, Habima Square, Carmel Market, and Wolfson Medical Center.
Initial construction work will be carried out in the Kfar Qanim area of Petah Tikva.
Adi Kain Karni, project manager for the M2 line at NTA company, stated that the commencement of construction of the first shaft is a crucial turning point in the implementation of the project. According to him, the new metro system will make public transport in Israel faster, more comfortable, and more efficient, significantly improving the daily lives of millions of people.
