Germany plans to deploy up to 1,200 communication and observation satellites in orbit in coming years to strengthen national security and space capabilities. The project, considered one of Germany's largest space programs to date, is expected to be implemented by 2030. The information was disclosed by the Handelsblatt newspaper.

According to the report, the core component of the program will be a new satellite system called SPOCK-2 (Space System for Persistent Operational Tracking). Within the project framework, the creation of a constellation of approximately 1,000 satellites is planned. This system aims to significantly enhance Germany's communication, observation, and reconnaissance capabilities while minimizing the country's dependence on foreign satellite services.

The total cost of the project is estimated at 35 billion euros. To ensure the operation of the satellite system, an additional approximately 1 billion euros per year will be required.

Germany's leading aerospace company OHB will be one of the main participants in implementing the program. Additionally, the project will involve Airbus Defence and Space, Rheinmetall, and Helsing, a company operating in the defense technology sector. Currently, various industrial consortiums are competing to execute the program.

According to experts, this initiative carries the goal of strengthening Germany's strategic independence in space. Recent changes in the geopolitical situation, particularly the decisive role of satellite communications and space reconnaissance in modern conflicts, have prompted Berlin to increase investments in this direction.

Full implementation of the project could make Germany one of the world's largest national satellite operators. This is also considered one of the most important steps toward expanding Europe's space security and defense capabilities.
