The Israeli Defense Ministry plans to develop offensive weapon systems to be stationed in space that will allow striking ground targets.
According to The Jerusalem Post, this direction has been included in Israel’s multi-year space defense plan. The plan envisages both protecting Israeli satellites from enemy spacecraft and creating weapons capable of striking targets on the Earth’s surface from space.
One of the main directions of the project is expanding space-based intelligence capabilities. The Defense Ministry plans to develop satellite capabilities that will allow round-the-clock reconnaissance under various weather conditions and simultaneously in several directions. Creating more resilient and continuous communication capabilities for the defense system is also among the priorities.
Defense Minister Israel Katz previously stated that his country must become a world leader in space offensive capabilities. According to him, such technologies could provide the Israel Defense Forces with a strategic advantage in terms of deterrence and strike capabilities in future conflicts.
At the end of June, Katz revealed that the development of laser technologies in space was also on the agenda. He emphasized that turning Israel into the leading country in this field is one of the main goals set.
The new plan is assessed as a continuation of the growing importance Israel has attached to space capabilities in recent years.
