President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev received newly appointed UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Dmitry Shlapachenko on September 2.
Jnews.az reports that during the meeting, Dmitry Shlapachenko presented his credentials to the head of state.
Azerbaijan-UN cooperation
Ilham Aliyev emphasized the importance of the partnership between Azerbaijan and the UN. The President noted that large-scale international events such as COP29 and the World Urban Forum are being held in the country.
The head of state also stated that the Forum on Intercultural Dialogue is planned to be held jointly with the UN Alliance of Civilizations.
Dmitry Shlapachenko called Azerbaijan an important partner of the UN. He noted Azerbaijan’s role as a «middle power» state hosting prestigious international events.
Mine problem in Karabakh discussed
Special attention at the meeting was also paid to the reconstruction work carried out in Karabakh and East Zangezur in the post-conflict period.
Dmitry Shlapachenko stated that the UN is ready to share its experience in the field of mine clearance with Azerbaijan and to provide support to the country in this direction.
Ilham Aliyev drew attention to the scale of the mine problem facing Azerbaijan and emphasized that despite obstacles to reconstruction work, consistent activities in this direction continue.
The UN Resident Coordinator stated that he plans to visit Karabakh in the near future. He also noted that a major event is planned at Karabakh University on the occasion of UN Day.
Environmental issues were also discussed at the meeting. The parties exchanged views on improving the ecological state of transboundary rivers in the South Caucasus and the issue of falling water levels in the Caspian Sea.
Dmitry Shlapachenko has been serving as the UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan since July 1, 2026. Prior to this, he served as the UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan in 2021-2026.
