The Peruvian government has decided to sever diplomatic relations with Iran.
Jnews.az reports that, according to a statement from the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the main reasons for the decision are the tense situation in the Middle East, Iran’s imposition of restrictions on international maritime trade in the Strait of Hormuz, the deterioration of the democratic situation in the country, and Iran obstructing international inspections of nuclear facilities.
The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also condemned Iran’s encouragement of violence and escalation of the conflict in the Middle East. The ministry also expressed concern over Tehran obstructing access for International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors to nuclear facilities.
However, severing diplomatic relations does not mean stopping all ties between Peru and Iran. The Peruvian government announced that consular relations between the two countries will be maintained.
The decision was communicated to the Iranian side via a diplomatic note through the Iranian embassy in Ecuador. This representation also functions as the diplomatic mission to Peru.
