The 4th International Mine Action Conference has begun in Baku. During the opening of the event, Vugar Suleymanov, Chairman of the Board of the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA), stated that solving the problem of mine contamination requires the consolidation of efforts from the global community.
According to Suleymanov, humanitarian demining is a critical stage in the restoration of liberated territories. He noted that the process of reconstructing cities, roads, and water and energy supply systems is impossible without first clearing the land of mines and explosive ordnance.
«No country can solve the mine problem alone. To ensure the transition from contaminated territories to safe and sustainable recovery, international cooperation, exchange of technical expertise, donor support, innovation, and a strong national initiative are necessary,» the head of ANAMA emphasized.
Vugar Suleymanov also presented data on the financing of demining operations. Since November 2020, approximately 590 million US dollars have been allocated for these purposes in Azerbaijan. As the agency head noted, only about 4% of this amount came from international support, while the remainder was financed by the government of Azerbaijan.
