The administration of US President Donald Trump has announced a ban on the import of several goods from Canada, including certain types of alcoholic beverages, dairy products, and motorcycles.
Jnews.az reports that according to the White House statement, these measures will take effect on September 29. It was reported that the decision is linked to the US viewing certain trade actions by Canada as discriminatory.
In parallel, the US is expanding the list of Canadian goods subject to a 50 percent tariff. The updated list, which will take effect on September 15, includes steel and aluminum products, as well as furniture and paper products. At the same time, technical salt and cement have been removed from the list.
The trade conflict between the two countries is further escalating against the backdrop of the suspension of bilateral negotiations. Back in August, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated that Ottawa had refused to conclude a favorable trade agreement. After that, on August 22, Washington imposed 50 percent tariffs on a number of Canadian goods.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed the cessation of negotiations with the US and announced the introduction of retaliatory tariffs on American products. Carney characterized the current situation as a «trade war» initiated, in his view, by Washington. In response to the US steps, Ottawa imposed increased tariffs on US goods on September 8.
Additional measures also include an executive order signed by Donald Trump on September 8, ordering relevant agencies to exclude Canadian products from government procurement plans totaling $50 billion.
Additionally, the US administration plans to impose 50 percent tariffs on Canadian automobiles, spare parts, and steel starting January 1, 2027.
