Two higher education institutions in Israel have ranked among the world’s top 100 universities.

Jnews.az reports that according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) compiled by «ShanghaiRanking», the Weizmann Institute of Science placed 71st, while the Hebrew University of Jerusalem ranked 89th.

First published in 2003, the ARWU ranking evaluates the performance of more than 2,500 universities annually. The top 1,000 higher education institutions among them are included in the final list.

When preparing the ranking, academic and scientific performance indicators of universities are taken into account, including the number of Nobel Laureates and Fields Medalists among staff and alumni, the presence of highly cited researchers, as well as research published in prestigious scientific journals such as «Nature» and «Science».

However, in recent years, a decline in the positions of some Israeli higher education institutions in the ranking has been observed. In 2023, the Weizmann Institute of Science and the Technion — Israel Institute of Technology recorded some of their highest results of the past decade, placing 68th and 79th, respectively. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem had climbed to 77th place in 2022.

In the current ranking, Technion remained outside the top 100. Meanwhile, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev slipped from the top 400 into the top 500.

Nevertheless, Tel Aviv University entered the world’s top 200 universities for the first time since 2022. Bar-Ilan University maintained its position in the top 600, while the University of Haifa placed in the top 700.
