Two workers were rescued alive from a hydroelectric power plant tunnel in Nepal 9 days after devastating floods and landslides occurred last week.
Jnews.az reports that as a result of a search and rescue operation in the tunnel of Nepal’s «Upper Trishuli 3A» hydroelectric power plant, two workers named Sanjay Sah and Kabir Maharjan were found alive. They were reported to be trapped at a depth of approximately 170 meters in the tunnel.
The rescued individuals were taken to the hospital. According to reports, their condition is stable. During the rescue, hearing human voices from inside the tunnel led to the intensification of the operation.
Thousands of people still missing
According to the latest information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal, 1 252 bodies have been recovered as a result of the floods, while 4 216 people are still considered missing. A total of 11 993 people were rescued from the disaster.
Search and rescue operations continue particularly in the tunnels of hydroelectric power plants. It is reported that approximately 900 workers are missing across various hydroelectric projects, and some of them may remain trapped in the tunnels.
Along with the Nepalese army and other rescue teams, specialists from India, China, and South Korea have also been involved in search operations in the tunnels.
The disaster reportedly began on August 26 when a glacial avalanche caused masses of ice, rock, and mud to flow into river valleys. In addition to Nepal’s northern regions, the floods also severely damaged the Tibet region in China.
