The death toll from the natural disaster that occurred on August 26 in Nepal has reached 1,273. According to official data, 1,252 victims were found in Nepal, and another 21 in Tibet. At present, more than 4,000 people remain missing.
Jnews.az reports that among those whose whereabouts are still unknown are nearly 600 foreign tourists and workers from 40 countries. This includes two Israeli citizens: a 60-year-old man and a 41-year-old holding dual citizenship of Israel and Belarus.
According to the organization Chabad in Nepal, the list of missing persons also includes about 30 Jewish visitors. Co-director Chani Lifshitz stated that Chabad representatives are maintaining contact with the families of the victims, local communities, and officials, verifying all incoming information regarding people’s whereabouts.
The search operation is significantly complicated by the aftermath of the disaster: torrents of water and mud have covered buildings and vehicles for dozens of kilometers. According to Chani Lifshitz, the condition of the bodies being recovered from under days-old layers of silt makes the identification process extremely difficult.
