President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev attended the opening ceremony of the new 220/110/10 kV Yeni Sangachal electrical substation built by AzerEnerji OJSC. According to the official website of the head of state, Balababa Rzayev, Chairman of the Open Joint Stock Company, informed the President about the capabilities of the new facility.
Integration of green energy
The large-scale project was implemented under a cooperation agreement between AzerEnerji and bp. It provides for integrating the 240 MW Shafag solar power plant, currently under construction in the Jabrayil district, into the national power grid. Thanks to the new substation, the Sangachal terminal will be supplied with renewable electricity via Azerbaijan's unified grid.
Transitioning the terminal to solar energy will allow the shutdown of its existing gas power plant. The facility's annual requirement of about 500 million kWh will be covered by renewable sources. This will save 120–150 million cubic meters of natural gas per year and reduce carbon emissions by 260,000–330,000 tons.
Technical specifications of the facility
The Yeni Sangachal substation, covering a total area of 6.5 hectares, is connected to the national power system via four new 220 kV power transmission lines totaling 111 km in length. Power is supplied from three independent sources: the Janub (785 MW) and Gobu (385 MW) power plants, as well as the 500 kV Absheron substation.
Five 110 kV overhead-cable lines with a total length of 25 km have been laid from the substation to the Sangachal terminal, with two more planned in the future. The new facility will supply power to the bp terminal (80 MW) and the Shah Deniz compressor station (85 MW), whose combined demand exceeds 1 billion kWh per year.
To ensure operational reliability and stability, a Control Center has been built on the substation site, advanced digital panels have been installed, and the facility has been integrated into the SCADA system.
