Iran is currently directing its attention not directly at Israel, but at US military bases located in Arab countries. This was stated by Amos Gilad, a retired major general and former senior official of Israel's Defense Ministry.
Amos Gilad, who currently heads the Institute for Policy and Strategy at Reichman University, said in an interview with 103FM radio that the main goal of Iran's recent attacks is to draw the United States into a broader confrontation in the region.
According to him, Israel's strong retaliatory potential forces Tehran to act cautiously.
"The difference is that we have very strong response capabilities. The Americans also respond with force, but Arab countries do not show the same reaction. It appears that Iran is currently focusing on US bases in Arab countries. The goal is to draw Washington into a deeper confrontation with Iran."
The former Israeli military officer believes that at the center of the current tension in the region lies geopolitical competition over the Strait of Hormuz, not the nuclear program or ballistic missiles.
According to him, Iran is trying to gain complete control over this strait. Tehran intends to both generate significant revenue from oil exports and turn it into a tool of strategic pressure.
At the same time, Amos Gilad emphasized that the main threat to Israel has not changed.
"Iran is the greatest threat to us. Tehran has not abandoned its intention to destroy Israel."
According to Amos Gilad, Iran's long-term strategy against Israel is based on three main directions: the use of armed allied groups in the region, including Hezbollah, the development of ballistic missile potential, and the continuation of its nuclear program.
