Geopolitics under fire: why Israel is shifting its strategy in the Eastern Mediterranean

Israel's new security challenges require a reassessment of approaches not only along the front lines but also in the sphere of economic defence. The situation in Lebanon, the threat from Iran, and strategic partnerships in the gas sector are reshaping the contours of a new regional security landscape.

Escalation in Lebanon and the work of TSAHAL

In the southern districts of Lebanon, TSAHAL units continue the systematic destruction of military infrastructure. Controlled detonations have been recorded in the populated areas of Beit Yahoun, Atatiri, Zutur and Hada. In parallel, army structures are actively countering internal security threats: according to available data, more than 30 investigations have been conducted into the leaking of classified information on social media, resulting in the detention of more than 80 military personnel.

Economic Warfare Against Terrorism

Israeli intelligence services are expanding their tools for combating non-state armed groups. The National Bureau for Counter-Terrorism Financing (MATAL) has succeeded in blocking 37 cryptocurrency wallets linked to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Hezbollah. The total value of frozen assets reached 24 million shekels. Experts note that such measures play a key role in the long-term destabilisation of radical groups' financial base.

A New Security Architecture in the Mediterranean

Against the backdrop of the formation of anti-Israel coalitions in the region, Israel is reinforcing its strategic alliances. A landmark development was the signing of an agreement with Cyprus on the joint development of the Aphrodite gas field (shares distributed as 90% for Cyprus and 10% for Israel).

This partnership has a deep defensive dimension. Ensuring Cyprus's sovereignty is a first-order strategic priority for Israel. In the editorial's assessment, preventing Turkish military presence on the island is critically important, as the deployment of missile systems there would place Israeli territory — located just 315 km away — within striking range. In effect, the gas agreement has become an instrument of security guarantee: Israel assumes obligations to defend Cypriot territorial waters and the integrity of the state.

Regional Instability and the Iranian Threat

The situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains tense. A permanent state of confrontation is observed: Iranian drones regularly attempt to attack commercial vessels, though most are intercepted by US forces. According to analysts, the existing 'cold war' format is nearing exhaustion, and a transition to a hot phase could occur after the US midterm elections in November 2026. This is also indicated by the increased presence of American carrier strike groups in the region.

What This Means

  • Shift in priorities: Israel's security is increasingly dependent on control over energy hubs and maritime routes in the Eastern Mediterranean.
  • Economic warfare: Blocking cryptocurrency assets is becoming as important as military operations, depriving terrorist structures of resources to sustain their activities.
  • Cyprus as a shield: The strategic partnership with Nicosia turns Cyprus into a forward line of defence against the expansion of regional powers.
  • Risk of escalation: The concentration of US forces and the activity of Iranian proxies at sea point to preparations for a larger-scale confrontation by the end of 2026.
