Higher education institutions cannot effectively combat antisemitism as long as they disregard what takes place in the educational process and in faculty governance bodies, stated Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).
“Universities cannot claim to be serious about addressing antisemitism as long as they ignore what is happening behind classroom doors and in faculty governance bodies,” Greenblatt emphasized.
Greenblatt’s assessment came following pro-Palestinian protests and the setting up of tent encampments on university campuses, including Columbia University in New York in April 2024, against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Discussions regarding antisemitism on university campuses in the US intensified particularly after October 7, 2023. According to the ADL, 1,694 antisemitic incidents were recorded on university campuses across the country in 2024. This represents an 84 percent increase compared to 2023.
In its first “Campus Antisemitism Report” published in April 2024, the ADL evaluated 85 US universities. The organization examined those universities’ policies on combating antisemitism, administrative actions, and the situation of Jewish students on campus. In the report, Columbia University received a “D” grade, while the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University received “F” grades.
At the same time, universities state that their approach is not limited solely to combating antisemitism, but that protecting the safety and freedom of expression of all students is also important. For example, Stanford University, in a letter sent to the ADL in April 2024, emphasized that ensuring all students, including Jewish students, participate in an educational environment free from discrimination and harassment is a priority for the university.
In the ADL’s subsequent campus report released in March 2026, it was reported that the situation had improved at some universities. According to the organization’s assessment, Columbia, Princeton, and Yale universities showed progress compared to the previous year, receiving a “C” grade. ADL leader Jonathan Greenblatt stated that developing concrete policies at universities and applying them consistently yields positive results.
