In Azerbaijan, the severely injured left hand of a 3-year-old child in a meat grinder was restored through a complex microsurgical operation.

Jnews.az reports that approximately seven hours after the incident, the child was delivered to the Clinic of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the A. Aliyev Institute of Advanced Training for Doctors.

Severe traumatic amputation

As a result of entrapment in the meat grinder, the child’s left wrist and metacarpus, as well as the thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers, were completely amputated at the level of the metacarpophalangeal joints.

After assessing the patient’s condition, he was urgently prepared for surgery. The complex reconstructive surgery was performed by a team of microsurgeons including Dilgam Mammadov, Bakhtiyar Gasymov, and Abidin Hasanli, with the participation of anesthesiologists Mail Sadiev and Dayag Akhmedli.

During the operation, the bone structures of the wrist and metacarpus were brought into anatomical position and internally fixed. Then, the flexor and extensor tendons of the hand, radial and ulnar arteries, median and ulnar nerves, as well as the corresponding digital arteries and nerves, were restored using microsurgical techniques.

The child’s condition is stable

All stages of the operation, which lasted approximately eight hours, were successfully completed.

After the surgery, the child was kept under intensive observation in the intensive care unit for 24 hours. After his condition stabilized, he was transferred to a general ward on the second day after the operation.

At present, the child’s condition is assessed as satisfactory.
