Pirshagi is considered one of Baku's oldest settlements. The Azerbaijani Soviet Encyclopaedia dates its formation to the 17th century, while the Sabunchu district administration puts the first settlement in the 15th. The two dates do not agree, so both are given here.
The settlement moved over time. People first settled closer to the sea, where there were freshwater wells and shore stone for building. Then strong northern winds buried the coastal structures in sand and the population withdrew inland. Two cemeteries in the village mark these two stages.
