The Israeli government suspended the advancement of an initiative to recognize the 1915 events as the so-called «Armenian genocide,» removing the issue from the Knesset agenda.
This was reported by Assistant to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan — Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration Hikmet Hajiyev.
Hikmet Hajiyev stated in an interview with the «Haber Global» TV channel that the potential recognition of the so-called «Armenian genocide» in Israel caused serious concern in Azerbaijan. According to him, protecting Turkey’s national interests is considered an unalterable priority and a «red line» for Baku.
The presidential aide noted that immediately after the issue was included on the Knesset agenda, intensive diplomatic contacts with the Israeli side were launched on the instructions of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.
«We conveyed our position to the Israeli side. We stated that adopting such a decision would first of all be unfair, would not reflect historical reality, and we consider it unacceptable. The positive aspect is that the Israeli side took Azerbaijan’s messages seriously,» Hikmet Hajiyev stated.
According to him, as a result of the diplomatic activity carried out, the further advancement of the initiative was prevented.
