A vast majority of hate crimes recorded in New York in July 2026 were directed against Jews. According to statistics released by the New York Police Department (NYPD), nearly 70% of confirmed crimes in this category were antisemitic in nature.
According to official data, after conducting investigations, the police classified 33 incidents in July as hate crimes. Of these, 23 cases, or 69.7%, were directed against Jews.
In total, 50 reports of alleged hate crimes were received during the month, 29 of which were antisemitic in nature.
According to statistics, compared to July of last year, when 15 similar incidents were registered, the number of antisemitic crimes increased by 53.3%. This increase is particularly notable as Jews make up about 10% of the total population of New York City.
Data covering the first seven months of the year show that this trend continues. Thus, in January–July 2026, a total of 360 hate crimes were confirmed in the city, which is 9.4% more compared to the same period last year. 205 of those crimes, or 56.9%, were committed against Jews.
Additionally, the number of antisemitic crimes recorded since the beginning of the year increased by 8.5%, rising from 189 to 205.
New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin stated to the JNS agency that she expressed serious concern over the rise in hate crimes directed against the city’s Jewish community.
It should be noted that these statistics were released amid a decline in overall crime levels in New York. Specifically, in July 2026, the number of major crimes recorded in the city decreased by 12.7% compared to the same month last year.
