In Israel, the mother of 7-year-old Bel Finkelstein expressed gratitude to the family of fallen Israeli soldier Shahar Gamla for an organ transplant that saved her daughter’s life.
Born with a rare congenital genetic syndrome, Bel spent six months waiting for an organ transplant. The girl received a second chance at life thanks to the decision to donate organs by another Israeli family who faced tragedy earlier this year.
Captain Shahar Gamla, 23, was killed on June 6 in Lebanon in a Hezbollah drone strike. His family decided to donate his organs. This decision allowed the lives of six people, including Bel, to be saved.
Later, Bel, from the city of Rishon LeZion, and her family met Gamla’s parents at the Schneider Children’s Medical Center in Petah Tikva.
During the meeting, Bel’s mother expressed her gratitude to Gamla’s parents:
“I cannot find the words to adequately thank Shahar’s dear parents, who at the hardest moment of their grief decided to give life to my daughter. This is a very noble and extraordinary step.”
The girl’s mother also expressed gratitude to the staff at Schneider Medical Center, who cared for Bel and tirelessly attended to her throughout the treatment process.
Following the successful operation, Bel underwent rehabilitation treatment in the hospital for a long time and was later discharged home.
Dr. Michael Gurevitch, head of the liver transplantation department at Schneider Children’s Medical Center, described the event as medically extremely complex, as well as an emotionally difficult process.
“I am deeply grateful to the family for their noble decision to donate his organs. The realization that this soldier saved lives both while performing his duty and after his passing weighs heavily on our hearts. We are deeply grateful for the privilege granted to us to save human lives.”
