An armed attack was carried out against members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Paveh, a city in Kermanshah province, western Iran, near the Iraqi border.
According to Iranian state media, unknown assailants opened fire on IRGC members in front of a residential building. The attack resulted in the deaths of two IRGC personnel and injured two others. The injured were hospitalized, with one reportedly in critical condition.
The IRGC described the incident as a "terrorist act" and announced that large-scale operational and search measures are ongoing to identify and apprehend the perpetrators of the attack.
Meanwhile, a lesser-known armed group called "Khore Heva" ("Sun of Hope") claimed responsibility for the attack. In a statement, the group asserted that the operation was carried out in response to the harsh intervention by security forces against protests that erupted after the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022. Iranian officials have not yet commented on this claim.
The incident is considered one of the latest to indicate a renewed escalation of the security situation in Iran's Kurdish-populated Kermanshah region.
