American scholar Amy-Jill Levine has been elected president of the Catholic Biblical Association (CBA). She is the first Jewish scholar in the organization’s history to be elected to this position. Levine will serve as president for 2026–2027. Her election was confirmed on July 20 at the Association’s annual meeting in Baltimore.
A scholar of the New Testament, Levine is professor emerita at Vanderbilt University Divinity School. She also serves as professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies at Hartford International University for Religion and Peace.
In 2019, Levine became the first Jewish scholar to teach the New Testament at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. Throughout her career, she has conducted research on Jewish-Christian relations and the interpretation of biblical texts in Jewish and Christian traditions.
One of the scholar’s main focus areas in her new role is strengthening mutual understanding between Jewish and Catholic communities. Levine’s work particularly aims to contribute to a better understanding of Jewish beliefs, traditions, and religious practices in the 1st century AD.
Her election as president is also viewed as an important event for Jewish-Christian dialogue in the United States. The Catholic Biblical Association of America was established in 1936 and brings together biblical scholars from various religious traditions.
