For the first time in the world, Israel has deployed a high-energy laser system designed to neutralize rockets, mortar shells, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the air into operational use. Named "Iron Beam", this system aims to further strengthen the country's air defense capabilities.
The system was developed as a result of decades of research and development work by the Israeli Ministry of Defense and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. Iron Beam detects an incoming aerial threat, tracks it, and directs a high-power laser beam at the target, destroying it within seconds.
The operational system has been named "Or Eitan" ("Eitan's Light"). This name is dedicated to the memory of Captain Eitan Oster of the Israel Defense Forces, who was killed during combat in Lebanon in 2024.
One of the main advantages of the new technology is that it drastically reduces the financial cost of interception operations. In the "Iron Dome" system used for defense, the missiles fired to destroy each target cost tens of thousands of dollars. Powered by electricity, Iron Beam significantly lowers the marginal cost per interception compared to missiles and reduces Israel's dependence on limited missile stocks.
However, the laser system is designed to complement rather than replace the Iron Dome system. Because atmospheric conditions such as cloudy weather, heavy rain, and dust can reduce the laser beam's effectiveness, traditional interceptor missiles will maintain their vital role in the defense system. Under favorable weather conditions, the laser system will be used instead of expensive missiles.
