Jerusalem resident, four-year-old Shalom Saginer died as a result of an accident during a family vacation in Mexico. The incident occurred at one of the hotels located in the city of San José del Cabo.
According to preliminary reports, the boy's foot slipped and he fell into the pool and drowned. Rescuers and medical personnel who quickly arrived at the scene tried to provide resuscitation assistance to the child, but were unable to save his life. Doctors confirmed the child's death.
Shalom Saginer is the son of Rabbi Asaf Saginer and the grandson of Rabbi Shalom Arush, a prominent leader of Breslov Hasidism in Israel and head of the 'Chut Shel Chessed' ('Thread of Kindness') network of centers, which works with people returning to religious life.
Mexican law enforcement authorities planned an autopsy in order to officially determine the cause of death. For this reason, the child's body was initially held in a morgue.
However, volunteers from the Jewish search-and-rescue organization ZAKA and the child's relatives succeeded in having the body released to the family without an autopsy. It is reported that carrying out such a procedure conflicts with Jewish religious norms regarding the protection of the dignity of the deceased.
Currently, ZAKA volunteers and the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs are assisting the deceased child's family. They are cooperating with Mexican authorities to process the necessary documentation and transport Shalom Saginer's body to Israel as quickly as possible for burial.
