Israel is preparing for a prolonged extreme heatwave, which will intensify over the coming days and reach its peak on Wednesday. According to weather forecasters, air temperatures in parts of the country will exceed 40 degrees. Along with the hot weather, the risk of wildfires is also expected to increase significantly.
The temperature rise began on Monday. Clear weather set in across most areas of the country after morning cloudiness. Daytime highs today are forecast to reach 31°C in Tel Aviv, 32°C in Haifa, 33°C in Jerusalem, 37°C in Beersheba, 38°C in Kiryat Shmona, 39°C in Tiberias, and 42°C in Eilat.
The increase in temperature will be particularly noticeable in inland and mountainous regions.
On Tuesday, heavy to extreme heat conditions will cover most of Israel. In inland and mountainous areas, the weather will be hot and dry. Along the Mediterranean coast, high humidity will further exacerbate the effect of the hot weather.
Wednesday is reported to be the peak of the heatwave and the hottest day of the current period. Starting Thursday, although the hot weather will begin to gradually weaken, temperatures will still remain above seasonal norms. A more noticeable weakening of the hot weather is expected in the second half of the week.
Due to a significant increase in the national fire danger index, the Israel Fire and Rescue Service urged the public to strictly observe precautions. The Commissioner signed a nationwide order banning open fires in open areas until August 31.
Authorities warned the public to avoid prolonged sun exposure, strenuous physical activity, and dehydration. Special attention is recommended for the elderly, children, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic conditions during hot weather conditions.
Residents are advised to stay in air-conditioned spaces, consume sufficient water, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, and apply sunscreen when going outdoors.
