The relations between Israel and Azerbaijan must be taken into account when the Knesset discusses the issue of recognizing the so-called «Armenian genocide.»
This was stated by Rabbi Zamir Isayev, chairman of the Baku Sephardic Jewish Community, in an interview with Israeli media. He noted that this issue is extremely sensitive not only historically but also politically and strategically. According to him, when making a decision, Israel should consider the position of Azerbaijan, its reliable partner for many years, and the concerns of the Jewish community living in that country.
«Azerbaijan is one of the closest and most loyal friends of the State of Israel. For centuries, Jews have lived in this country in conditions of security, religious freedom, and respect. Even today, the Jewish community enjoys complete religious freedom, functioning synagogues, Jewish schools, and receives great respect from the state leadership as well as society.»
According to him, Azerbaijan has stood by Israel even in the most difficult times, continuing cooperation in security, energy, and other strategic areas despite regional and international pressures.
«Azerbaijan has repeatedly proven to be a true partner of Israel. The fact that a country with a majority Muslim population has for many years demonstrated friendship, mutual respect, and cooperation with the Jewish people and Israel is an example for the whole world.»
Zamir Isayev stated that the issue of recognizing the «Armenian genocide» remains a controversial topic among historians and politicians, and turning such a complex issue into a political decision could hurt the feelings of one of Israel’s closest friends.
«We live here, we are well aware of the sensitivities of the region and the consequences that such decisions can entail. This is not just a historical issue. Such decisions affect public opinion, the Jewish community in Azerbaijan, and the special relations that have formed between Azerbaijan and Israel over many years.»
He added that the Israeli leadership should also listen to the position of diaspora Jewish communities when making decisions.
«The voice of Jewish communities, who are intimately familiar with the realities of the countries they live in, cannot be ignored. Our experience and position must also be taken into account.»
Zamir Isayev also stated that the Jewish communities in Azerbaijan sent a letter to the deputies of the SHAS and «Yahadut HaTorah» factions, urging them to bring Azerbaijan’s position on the issue and the concerns of the Jewish community living in that country to the attention of Foreign Minister Gideon Saar and other decision-makers. He emphasized that all political, historical, and strategic factors must be thoroughly evaluated before discussions continue in the Knesset.
