Special envoy and son-in-law of US President Donald Trump Jared Kushner met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem to discuss a plan to end the war in the Gaza Strip.
The talks reviewed issues related to restoring the ceasefire in Gaza, disarming Hamas, withdrawing Israeli forces from the territory, and the future reconstruction of the enclave.
The meeting took place after the Israeli prime minister publicly expressed his objections to the final phase of the US-backed plan. Netanyahu stated that Israeli troops would not withdraw from the Gaza Strip until Hamas was fully disarmed. Hamas, for its part, wants the disarmament process to be linked to Israel halting military operations and withdrawing its troops from the territory.
Prior to the meeting in Jerusalem, Kushner met in Egypt with Hamas political leader Khalil al-Hayya. This meeting is viewed as one of the rare direct contacts between a US official and Hamas leadership.
Although no final agreement has been reached between the parties yet, following the meetings, an agreement was reached on establishing working groups on Gaza’s disarmament and humanitarian issues, including public health.
