US President Donald Trump said in an interview with Fox News on Tuesday that Iran would face severe consequences if it attempts to back out of the negotiation process again.
According to Trump, if Tehran takes such a step, it will face the toughest measures from the US.
“If they back out again, they will get hit very hard. They know this and understand it. I have no choice. Iran cannot have nuclear weapons. It’s very simple,” Trump said.
The US President emphasized that Iran “will never get a nuclear weapon,” and claimed that a decision on this would soon be formalized.
Trump also noted that Washington was preparing “a huge attack, the largest since World War II,” before Iranian officials took the initiative to hold talks.
Agreement on the Strait of Hormuz expected
Meanwhile, according to information reported by Axios citing Israeli journalist Barak Ravid and US officials, the US, Iran, and Oman are close to reaching an interim agreement on reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
According to reports, if the agreement comes into force, within 60 days inbound vessels to the Strait of Hormuz will pass through Iran’s territorial waters, while outbound vessels will pass through Oman’s waters. No additional transit fees will be charged. In addition, naval mines located in the central part of the strait are expected to be cleared within 30 days.
It is reported that Iran’s leadership completed the approval procedure for the agreement on Tuesday. According to reports, Donald Trump decided to temporarily postpone the launch of large-scale military operations to allow room for diplomatic efforts.
