Donald Trump stated that the US Navy has completely cleared the strategically important Strait of Hormuz of mines and currently controls 100 percent of the waterway.
Trump made these remarks to reporters on August 10. He said that the US military had completed demining operations across the entire strait and that the waterway was open.
According to the US president, no party other than the US Navy currently controls the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump’s statement comes as negotiations between the US and Iran over the opening of the strait continue. Washington demands the restoration of safe and free navigation through Hormuz, while Tehran puts forward a number of conditions.
However, despite Trump’s statement that the strait is open, commercial shipping has not yet returned to previous levels. According to Reuters, during the week ending August 7, average daily oil exports passing through the Strait of Hormuz fell to 3 million barrels, down from 4.4 million barrels the previous week.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the main routes for energy exports from the Middle East to global markets. Therefore, restrictions on shipping in the waterway directly affect global energy markets and oil prices.
Although the US president’s latest statement shows that Washington has strengthened military control in the Strait of Hormuz, the situation regarding the actual full reopening of the strait for international commercial shipping in normal mode remains uncertain.
