The US Department of Defense has called on the country’s defense industry to increase the production of military items and significantly shorten delivery times.
In a memorandum sent to executives of industrial companies, US Deputy Secretary of Defense Steve Feinberg demanded the preparation of concrete plans for faster delivery schedules and increased production capacity across critical defense capabilities. Companies have been given 21 days to submit these plans.
In the document, Feinberg stated that multi-year development and procurement processes are no longer acceptable, emphasizing the need to accelerate programs and expand production capacity.
US Department of Defense spokesperson Sean Parnell confirmed the authenticity of the memorandum. According to him, the initiative is part of a broader program to strengthen the country’s defense-industrial base and will also influence the shaping of the future defense budget.
The decision was made against the backdrop of discussions about US military stockpiles coming under severe strain recently. According to AP, the state of Washington’s military stockpiles, particularly amid long-term operations, has raised concern among US officials and analysts. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump stated that the country has sufficient weapon stockpiles and that new products are being manufactured and delivered.
Feinberg’s initiative is viewed as a continuation of the US administration’s policy aimed at accelerating production processes in the defense industry, reducing bureaucratic hurdles, and making the military procurement system more agile. The US Department of Defense has previously launched initiatives involving industry representatives to accelerate procurement processes and expand production capabilities.
