A 5.8-magnitude earthquake has been recorded off the coast of Occidental Mindoro province in the western Philippines.
The tremors occurred at 10:38 local time. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the epicenter of the earthquake was located approximately 21 kilometers southwest of the town of Mamburao in Occidental Mindoro province, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The tremors were felt in several regions, including the country's capital, Manila. Strong shaking was felt in office buildings in the capital. As a precautionary measure, employees of one of the government agencies were evacuated from their building.
According to the preliminary assessment by PHIVOLCS, no serious damage or casualties are expected as a result of the earthquake. However, the agency warned that aftershocks could occur in the region.
Because the Philippines is located on the highly seismically active zone known as the Pacific Ring of Fire, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are regularly recorded in the country.
