The first section of Line L3 of Jerusalem’s Green Line light rail network will open to passengers on August 21. The new line will connect the Malha neighborhood with the city center, marking a significant update to the public transportation system.
Starting from the Malha area, the new Line L3 extends toward Givat Ram, the government quarter, and Binyanei HaUma and HaTurim located at the entrance to the city.
According to official project information, Line L3 is the first section of the Green Line to be put into operation and will operate on the Malha–HaTurim route.
In the first days, trams will run less frequently
Prior to the launch of the new line, test runs were conducted on it. During testing, full route operations were verified between Malha and HaTurim.
In the initial stage, the line will operate in a limited mode. Trams are scheduled to run at intervals of approximately 12 to 15 minutes. As the system fully stabilizes, peak-hour intervals are planned to be reduced to 8 to 10 minutes.
This phase is intended to test the new line under real passenger flow conditions.
Which areas will Line L3 serve?
The Line L3 route will connect a number of key sites in Jerusalem.
Key locations served by the line include:
- Binyanei HaUma International Convention Center;
- the government quarter;
- the Hebrew University’s Givat Ram campus;
- the Botanical Garden;
- Teddy Stadium and Pais Arena;
- Malha Shopping Center;
- transport hubs in the Malha area.
The new line will connect the Malha neighborhood with the city center more conveniently. Passengers will also be able to transfer to other light rail lines and intercity transport.
Some stops will be closed during major events
During major events held around Teddy Stadium and Pais Arena, the nearby light rail stop may be temporarily closed for security reasons.
In such cases, passengers will be directed to other nearby stops, including toward the Malha Shopping Center.
The main purpose of the decision is to ensure safer management of the large crowds gathering around the stadium and arena.
A unified light rail network is taking shape in Jerusalem
The launch of Line L3 is significant not only for opening a new route, but also for forming a unified light rail network in Jerusalem.
The new line will connect with the existing Red Line light rail in the HaTurim and Binyanei HaUma areas. This will allow passengers to transfer from one line to another to easily reach various parts of the city.
The new system will also improve connections with the Yitzhak Navon railway station and intercity bus transport.
The Green Line is not yet fully in operation
Line L3 is only the first stage of the Green Line light rail. Other sections of the line are planned to open in the future.
One of the next stages involves connecting the Gilo neighborhood to the light rail network. With the launch of Line L4, light rail connections between the southern parts of Jerusalem and other areas of the city will expand further.
Once the Green Line is fully developed, a broader and more convenient light rail network connecting various destinations in Jerusalem is expected to be created.
Thus, Line L3, which begins operations on August 21, will be an important milestone in expanding Jerusalem’s public transportation system.
