President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has nominated Erlan Karin for the position of vice president of the country.
Jnews.az reports that this proposal was voiced on August 31 at the first meeting of the newly formed Qurultay.
Erlan Karin previously held the position of State Counselor to the President of Kazakhstan.
According to the Constitution of Kazakhstan, if the president voluntarily resigns, is unable to perform duties due to health reasons, is removed from office, or dies, the powers of the head of state pass to the vice president.
If the vice president is also unable to exercise the powers of the president, leadership of the country passes to the chairman of the Qurultay. The next person in the line of succession is the prime minister.

In addition, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev also nominated Olzhas Bektenov for the post of Prime Minister of Kazakhstan.
This decision effectively means Bektenov will retain his current position. He has been serving as the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan since February 6, 2024.
