One person died and 16 others sustained various injuries after a car was driven into a crowd during a festival in the German capital, Berlin. Some of the wounded are reported to be in critical condition.
According to information released by the Berlin police, the suspect in the incident is a 21-year-old German citizen of Lebanese descent, Abdullah Ballout. Law enforcement agencies announced that he has ties to extremist Islamist groups.
Operations are currently underway to apprehend the suspect. Police do not rule out the possibility that other individuals may have been involved in the incident. At the same time, a search was conducted at Ballout's residence.
According to the Bild newspaper, Abdullah Ballout is a supporter of the ISIS terrorist organization. The publication writes that he was previously convicted of violent crimes and was held in a juvenile correctional facility until May 2025.
The attack occurred during an annual festival held in support of the LGBT community. The investigation into the motive and other details of the incident is ongoing.
