The NATO Leaders Summit held in Ankara has concluded with the adoption of its final document — the "Ankara Declaration." In the document, member states formally reaffirmed their commitment to collective defence and transatlantic unity.

Defence spending and the Russian threat

The Declaration explicitly identifies Russia as a long-term threat to Euro-Atlantic security. Particular emphasis was placed on strengthening defence capabilities: allies are set to procure new defence equipment worth more than $50 billion.

Financial support for Ukraine

NATO leaders reaffirmed their continued support for Ukraine. According to the Declaration, €70 billion will be allocated in 2026 for military equipment, humanitarian aid and training programmes. A commitment was also made to maintain support at no less than the same level in 2027.

Call to Iran

The document includes a dedicated position on Iran: allies stressed that Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons. Tehran was also called upon to respect freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
