The emerging agreement between the United States and Iran, which was meant to help reduce tensions in the Middle East, has run into serious difficulties. The primary obstacle remains the volatile situation in Lebanon, where the conflict continues at high intensity.

Escalation on Israel's Northern Border

Despite diplomatic statements, events on the ground have significantly changed the picture. During the night of June 19, 2026, Israeli forces suffered significant losses: four soldiers of the 401st Armored Brigade were killed, and five more were wounded in clashes with Hezbollah fighters.

The Israeli army maintains a buffer zone approximately 10 kilometers deep inside Lebanese territory. This reduces the risk of border breaches and the use of anti-tank missiles, but does not provide full protection against drone attacks, which remain a serious threat to troops.

Iranian Influence and the Fate of the Memorandum

There is a view that Hezbollah's military activity is occurring under direct orders from Tehran. It is believed that Iran is seeking to undermine the practical implementation of agreements, blaming Israel for this in order to then extract more favorable terms from the US.

At this moment the situation around the deal looks extremely unstable:

  • Breakdown of negotiations: The Iranian delegation cancelled a planned visit to Geneva, and the participation of US Vice President JD Vance in a document exchange ceremony is in question.
  • Iran's position: Iranian leadership is demonstrating no intention to make real concessions on its nuclear program, despite having signed the memorandum.
  • Washington's pressure: The US is urging Israel to halt attacks and withdraw troops from Lebanon, which puts Jerusalem in a difficult position between ensuring national security and maintaining relations with the American administration.

Risks to the Implementation of Agreements

Many such memorandums often fail to reach full implementation due to numerous obstacles and disagreements. Iran, by all appearances, has no intention of abandoning its nuclear ambitions, and the current standoff merely postpones the inevitable. A new large-scale war, it is believed, remains only a matter of time, as all attempts to "freeze" the conflict through temporary agreements are unable to resolve the deep-seated contradictions.
