Haim Yavin, one of the founders of Israeli television, the country's first news anchor, and a journalist, director, and producer known as "Mr. Television," has passed away at the age of 93.
According to information released by his family, Yavin passed away on July 22. His funeral will be held on July 24 at the Givat HaShlosha cemetery in Israel.
Haim Yavin presented the first broadcast of "Mabat" ("Mabat LaHadashot"), the first television news program in Israeli history, in 1968 and served as the country's most influential news anchor for the following 40 years. He remained one of the faces of state television until his retirement in 2008.
Yavin was known not only as a news anchor but also as a documentary filmmaker and producer. One of his most famous works is the 1991 documentary series "The Land of the Settlers" ("Tleyushiy uqolek"). The series reflected the lives and challenges faced by Jews living in the USSR. In addition, he produced numerous documentary projects about Israeli political life and Arab citizens.
Throughout his journalistic career, Yavin covered the most significant events in Israeli history. He was the first to use the term "mahapach" ("upheaval" or "political change") on air to describe the shift in power during the 1977 parliamentary elections. He was also the first journalist to announce the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin to the public via television in 1995.
Haim Yavin's contributions to the media field were highly regarded. He received the Israel Prize for his work in journalism and communication in 1997 and the Israeli Academy of Film and Television award in 2003.
In a condolence message, Israeli President Isaac Herzog stated that for decades, Haim Yavin informed Israelis with professionalism and responsibility during the most critical events in the country's history. The President emphasized that his voice and face became an inseparable part of the history of the State of Israel and left an indelible mark on the country's media landscape.
