Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov met on September 3 with President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly (PA) Pere Joan Pons Sampietro, who is on a visit to the country.

Jnews.az reports that the meeting discussed issues on the cooperation agenda between Azerbaijan and the OSCE PA, existing security challenges in the OSCE area, the situation in the region, as well as the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace agenda.

Importance of inter-parliamentary dialogue

Jeyhun Bayramov stated that Azerbaijan attaches importance to cooperation with the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly. The Minister noted that inter-parliamentary dialogue plays an important role in strengthening mutual understanding, trust, and cooperation in the OSCE area.

In this context, the contribution of the Milli Majlis’s activities within the OSCE PA, mutual visits, and meetings held at various levels to the development of relations was emphasized.

Mine threat and missing persons issue

Humanitarian problems of the post-conflict period were also in focus during the meeting. Jeyhun Bayramov stated that the mine threat remains a serious problem hindering restoration and reconstruction work in the liberated territories, the return of former internally displaced persons, and regional development.

The Minister also emphasized the importance of determining the fate of approximately 4,000 missing Azerbaijanis.

Energy and transport issues

The parties also discussed Azerbaijan’s contribution to international and regional energy security. Views were exchanged on Azerbaijan’s role as a reliable partner in Europe’s energy security, projects implemented to diversify energy sources and routes, as well as ‘green’ energy initiatives.

Azerbaijan’s contribution to the development of regional connectivity as a country located at the intersection of transport corridors was also noted. In this context, the importance of developing the Middle Corridor connecting Europe and Central Asia via the Caspian Sea and expanding transport and logistics capabilities was emphasized.

Cooperation with Central Asia

The dynamics of the development of Azerbaijan’s strategic partnership with Central Asian countries were also discussed during the meeting. It was stated that the transformation of the C5 format into the C6 format creates new opportunities for cooperation.

The parties also exchanged views on current challenges in the OSCE area and other regional and international issues of mutual interest.
