Internal discussions are underway within the US Navy regarding a potential name change for the aircraft carrier currently designated as CVN-81. According to available reports, one of the options being discussed is naming the ship after the current US President, Donald Trump.
It was originally planned that the aircraft carrier would be named after Doris Miller, a World War II hero who displayed courage during the attack on Pearl Harbor. If a decision is made to rename the carrier after Donald Trump, it would be an unprecedented move, as such ships have not previously been named after sitting presidents.
Discussions regarding the ship's name have been ongoing since the beginning of this year. Currently, the ship is officially designated within the Navy structure by its hull number, CVN-81.
Despite the potential name change for the aircraft carrier, US Navy leadership is considering alternative ways to honor Doris Miller's memory. Specifically, it has been proposed to name another military vessel after him. Additionally, the Navy has initiated a proposal to nominate Miller for the United States' highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor.
