The Russian army carried out a large-scale air attack on Ukraine on the night of August 20. Along with Kyiv, Odesa, and Chernihiv regions, areas located on the border with Moldova were also struck.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russian forces struck a border crossing point located on the border with Moldova. As a result of the attack, transport and security risks emerged in the border region.
Russian drone entered Moldovan airspace
According to the Ministry of Defense of Moldova, an unauthorized flight into its airspace was recorded at 03:16 on August 20.
According to preliminary information, the aircraft was a Russian Shahed-136 type drone. The drone entered Moldovan territory from the direction of the settlement of Kotlovyna in Ukraine’s Reni district and moved toward Etulia.
The Moldovan side stated that the drone left the country’s airspace at 03:22 and crossed back toward Ukraine. It was noted that the incident took place against the backdrop of the air attacks Russia carried out on Ukraine that night.
This incident is one of the incidents recorded in recent days involving Russia’s attacks against Ukraine spilling over into Moldovan territory and airspace.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, overnight Russia struck Ukraine with two Iskander-M ballistic missiles and 65 attack drones.
Ukrainian air defense forces destroyed or neutralized 50 of the 65 UAVs. It was reported that some of the remaining drones reached targets in various areas.
As a result of the attack, one person was killed and 10 people were injured in the city of Zaporizhzhia. Damage was caused to residential and civilian infrastructure in the city.
Death toll in Kyiv reaches 12
The consequences of the attack on Kyiv were even more severe. As a result of the attack carried out by the Russian army with ballistic missiles, at least 12 people were killed and more than 30 people were injured in Kyiv.
The hardest blow hit the capital’s Solomianskyi district. As a result of the destruction on the upper floors of a nine-story residential building, 7 people lost their lives. During the attack, along with residential buildings, non-residential facilities, warehouses, a school, and a children’s hospital were also damaged.
As a result of the attack, approximately 90,000 subscribers in Kyiv lost electricity. Part of the power supply was later restored.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defense of Russia stated that the attacks were carried out against facilities related to the production of unmanned aerial vehicle components in and around Kyiv, a military warehouse, and a logistics center.
