Police in Jerusalem have launched an investigation into an act of vandalism at the Kol HaNeshamah Reform synagogue, located in the Baka neighborhood. Over the weekend, an unknown group broke into the religious complex, damaged the building and artwork, and tore down flags symbolizing inclusion and community acceptance.
Details of the Incident
According to the synagogue, the incident occurred shortly after midnight. Several individuals broke a window and entered the sanctuary. No congregants were inside at the time. Synagogue staff handed over security camera footage to law enforcement showing at least three suspects involved in the offense. A forensics specialist also visited the scene to collect fingerprints.
“Precisely during the month of mercy and forgiveness, it is painful to see manifestations of hatred and violence that have no place in a normally functioning society,” said the synagogue’s rabbi, Debbie Shohat-Haim, commenting on the incident during the month of Elul.
Founded in 1984, the Kol HaNeshamah congregation has previously faced similar attacks over its support for religious pluralism and minority rights. Synagogue leadership stated that despite the incident, the congregation will continue its activities as an open and welcoming house of prayer.
