The Main Department for Combating Cybercrime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of the Republic of Azerbaijan conducted a special operation to suppress numerous cases of cyber fraud committed using the names of law enforcement officers and civil servants.

As a result of operational measures, eight people were detained. They are reported to be Farid Aliyev, Asiman Zeynalov, Tofig Aliyev, Farid Atakishiyev, Royal Abdullayev, Anar Mammadov, Rashad Hajiyev, and Hamid Aliyev.

According to the agency, the suspects used fake profiles on social networks and accounts in the WhatsApp messenger. During the investigation, it was established that they acted in collusion with cybercrime groups operating outside the country.

The detainees maintained contact with members of foreign criminal groups and organized the online sale of virtual numbers from local mobile operators, bank cards, and other data.

In total, it was established that they illegally obtained and transferred for use to criminal groups more than 2,000 bank cards and mobile numbers.

During the investigation, it was also revealed that some of these mobile numbers and bank details were used in the organization of illegal online gambling and virtual casinos.

Investigative and operational-technical measures regarding the detainees are currently ongoing. Law enforcement agencies are taking measures to identify other members of international cybercrime groups and bring them to justice.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs urged citizens to be vigilant and reminded that transferring bank card details, mobile numbers, and other personal data to third parties is unacceptable.

The ministry recommended that individuals who encounter illegal use of cards or mobile numbers, receipt of funds from suspicious sources, receipt of suspicious SMS messages, or offers to provide personal data for a reward contact the police immediately.
