A severe road accident involving a Polish-registered passenger bus occurred near the town of Mezőkeresztes in eastern Hungary. The crash left 12 people dead and at least 10 others seriously injured.
The crash occurred on Sunday morning on the M3 motorway. Traveling towards Nyíregyháza, the bus veered off a straight stretch of the road, overturned into a ditch and rolled onto its side.
According to preliminary Hungarian police data, the cause of the accident may have been the driver falling asleep at the wheel. A total of 57 passengers and two drivers were on board. According to reports, all passengers were Polish citizens from the Podkarpackie region. They were reportedly returning from a pilgrimage in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Numerous rescue and medical teams were dispatched to the crash site. Some passengers were reportedly trapped under the bus. All the injured were taken to hospitals.
Police have detained the bus driver. An investigation is underway to establish the exact causes of the incident.
