NATO is ready to defend its member Bulgaria if it faces a potential attack threat from Iran.
Colonel Martin O’Donnell, spokesperson for NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), stated this in a statement to «Euronews» on July 23.
According to O’Donnell, NATO previously provided defense for Turkey, a member of the Alliance, during Iranian missile attacks as well. He emphasized that NATO will continue to respond to threats that may arise against the Alliance from Iran or any other party.
“We saw Iran fire missiles at Turkey — a NATO ally. NATO provided defense in all these cases. We will continue to respond to any threat that may arise against this defense alliance from Iran or any other party,” O’Donnell stated.
The statement came after Iran warned Bulgaria. Tehran protested Sofia’s agreement to the deployment of US military aircraft on its territory.
On July 22, the Bulgarian parliament approved the temporary deployment of up to eight US KC-135 refueling aircraft and up to 250 military personnel in the country.
It should be noted that the Iranian military is preparing to strike American military facilities in Europe if the confrontation with the US escalates again. Tehran is also considering the possibility of targeting underwater communication lines in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
This was reported by the «Financial Times» newspaper. According to the report, US military facilities in Southeastern Europe are among the main targets in Iran’s potential response plans. Facilities in Bulgaria and Southern Cyprus are reportedly among them.
