Why favourites rarely win here

The long straight and the slipstream keep the chasers in play until the final lap, and the walls forgive nothing. In Baku the winner is regularly not the fastest driver in qualifying.

2017 and 2021 are the clearest examples: in both cases the win went to a driver who did not look like a contender at half distance, while the leaders lost everything within a few laps of the flag.
