The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) movement unveiled its national platform, "Workers Deserve More," this week, in which it officially codified its support for the "Palestinian right to resist military occupation." The document also contains calls to end all military and economic aid to Israel and to hold US and Israeli leaders accountable "for the genocide in Gaza."
Position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
The DSA platform demands recognition of the "right of return" for all Palestinian refugees and their descendants to the territory of Israel. Furthermore, the movement advocates for the "right to self-determination in a free Palestine with its capital in Jerusalem." The document contains no other mention or recognition of Israel.
Other political goals
In foreign policy, the DSA calls for cutting funding to the US Department of Defense, closing overseas military bases, and lifting embargoes on Cuba, Venezuela, and Iran. Domestically, the movement proposes abolishing the Senate, ending the two-party system, and replacing the offices of the president and the Supreme Court with new bodies accountable to the House of Representatives.
Economic demands include transferring leading corporations to state ownership, "aggressive wealth taxes," and a 32-hour workweek. Candidates running with DSA support are now required to uphold this platform. The movement includes politicians such as US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and New York City Council member Zohran Mamdani.
