Former Union of Jewish Students (UJS) leadership programme participant and University of Nottingham graduate Libby Myers has called for strengthening ties between Jewish communities in different countries amid rising antisemitism. She reached these conclusions based on the results of a trip to the US organized as part of a UJS academic programme.
During a visit to New York and Washington, the UJS delegation studied the work of American Jewish organizations and socio-political institutions. As part of the trip, participants met with experts and analysts, including Dr. Yehuda Kurtzer, President of the Shalom Hartman Institute, and visited the American Jewish Committee (AJC).
She noted the scale of the Jewish community's infrastructure in the US compared to institutions in the UK. Myers highlighted AJC's experience in the political sphere, focused on a non-partisan approach and the necessity of maintaining dialogue with representatives of various political forces to ensure community safety.
In Washington, the programme participants visited the headquarters of the Jewish student organization Hillel. A meeting between American and British Jewish students and their representatives addressed the issue of their isolation from each other as a result of communities focusing on their own internal challenges.
According to Myers, the availability of modern communication tools should help strengthen transnational ties. She emphasized that developing dialogue between diasporas is essential for effectively countering antisemitism, preserving collective identity, and supporting shared public interests.
